Jan Kelly

Communication and Women’s Studies, Professor Emerita.  The University of Scranton, Scranton, PA (1988-2015).

Dr. Kelly taught a variety of courses: organizational, gender, small group, and interpersonal communication; introductory and advanced public relations; and communication theory.  Before coming to Scranton, she was a tenured professor and the director of graduate studies at San Jose State University, San Jose, CA.


 Women’s rights advocate. 

For the past forty years, Dr. Kelly has embraced projects designed to elevate the status of women. She is a founding member of local advocacy groups: Progressive Women of NEPA (2016), the Luzerne County Commission for Women and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Women in Higher Education. Dr. Kelly served as a board member for the statewide Pennsylvania Women’s Campaign Fund, a political action committee that funds progressive women candidates for the state legislature. During President Bill Clinton’s tenure, she consulted with the White House Office on Women’s Outreach and Initiatives and prepared a report, “Women’s Voices,” that was circulated throughout the administration and other federal agencies. She has worked on several women candidates' campaigns.  Dr. Kelly supports, through membership and/or financial support, the National Organization for Women (NOW), The American Association of University Women (AAUW),  Emily's List, The Fund for the Feminist Majority and the  Women's Political Action Committee of NEPA.
